MISSION The Foundation exists to provide capital that support nonprofits’ capacity to deliver services, achieve their community mission and, as a result, strengthen the local community. The Foundation’s mission is dedicated to helping create and sustain a vibrant and healthy community where all Silicon Valley residents have equal opportunity to live, work and be enriched. To accomplish its purpose, the Foundation invests in strong community-based nonprofits that promote self-reliance and economic independence, and positively contribute to the quality of life for economically, physically and emotionally challenged individuals. As a place-based grantmaker, the Foundation invests exclusively in nonprofits that serve low-income or underserved clients and beneficiaries that live and work in Santa Clara, Southern San Mateo and Southern Alameda counties.

(You will need Windows Media Player to view the video). We appreciate the nonprofit and philanthropic sector's recognition of our Foundation's innovative practices, our commitment to the local community, and the social impact achieved through our grantmaking strategy focused on
"Investing in the People and Places" of nonprofits. Other recent local awards include being honored by the Arts Council of Santa Clara County, Lenders for Community Development and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula.
PROGRAM ARTICLES The Foundation's Board and staff believe that providing general operating support to nonprofits is an effective strategy for achieving a Foundation’s own social impact. Therefore, within the grantmaking community, we actively advocate the need for general operating support as described in the Statement on Guidelines for the Funding of Nonprofit Organizations, endorsed by the Independent Sector
and the Grantmakers for Effective Organization’s General Operating Support case.

The Foundation is referenced as a unique leader in the March 2007 A Call to Action: Organizing to Increase the Effectiveness and Impact of Foundation Grantmaking
report published by The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy that
encourages nonprofits to advocate for general operating support from
funders. In addition, the Sobrato Family Foundation was featured in "Smart Money," a Stanford Social Innovation Review article about its uniqueness in funding rent expenses for nonprofits and recently in Business Week, for its strategy of donating buildings for charitable benefit.
The Foundation’s capacity building collaboration was highlighted in the Stanford Social Innovation Review article, "Leading Boldly."
