Building a Strong Foundation

The Sobrato tradition of civic involvement began with Ann Sobrato (1915-2000)—a visionary real estate developer and community leader. She exemplified the ideals of hard work and public service, and cultivated these same values in her son, John A. Sobrato.

For more than 50 years, John A. and his wife Susan have shared their business success with the Valley, raising their three children—John Michael Sobrato, Lisa Sobrato Sonsini and Sheri Sobrato Brisson—to be deeply engaged in community concerns. This multi-generational legacy of philanthropy was formalized by Lisa in 1996 with the establishment of the Sobrato Family Foundation (SFF), a private family foundation committed to sustaining the philanthropic legacy of the Sobrato family.

Combined assets of the family foundation and its public support organization have grown from $500,000 to more than $200 million, due in large part to the estate bequest of Ann Sobrato and the donation of individual Sobrato real estate holdings. SFF’s charitable program portfolio has expanded accordingly, with more than $70 million invested in the local community since inception.
